Appearance

Kelpies are giant, dull colored horses and generally have a wet look to them. Their manes and tails are stringy and unappealing, rather like seaweed. Their eyes are generally white and eerie, almost soulless.

Their coats are usually black, dark grey, dark green, or dark brown. Imagine gross mud and there you have it. Kelpies are gross.

They look like normal horses, aside from the above, until they open their mouths. Then they reveal a mouth full of terrifying fangs.

Abilities

Kelpies have the ability to breathe underwater for prolonged periods of time. They can also breathe in air.

This is perhaps the only thing that makes the kelpie extraordinary, aside from their ability to fool and lull foolish travelers to their doom.

Culture

Kelpies are solitary, and prefer to keep it that way. They like to lure lost travelers to their deaths by acting like a lost horse, and then they drag their victims down into the depths and drown them.

They're especially fond of children, who are easier to trick and lure away. Around swamps and bogs, it's common for mothers to warn their children to never trust a lone horse, no matter how much it cries.

Kelpies have recently made their homes in lakes, and often come to blows with kirin and other aquatic species. Often they are outnumbered and outmatched, and are subsequently either killed or forced to flee. Without water, a kelpie will surely die. It is said that salt will drive them away.
