Character's Name: Surley Whittaker

Nicknames: Su

Age: 130

Gender: Male

Species: Human (1/4 Kitsune)

Abilities: Nothing he can control.

Appearance: He’s frightfully fair skinned, though apricot would also be a good descriptor. He looks strong, with a wide chest and thick arms. He looks like the kind of man who would be able to carry heavy loads without complaint, and he maintains this physique by doing just that.

His waist is tapered and ends with strong legs. Some consider him a masterpiece sculpted by the gods, but really he just has a healthy diet and a rigorous workout routine that he honors every single morning.

His face is chiseled, with a strong brow and chin. He has smokey blue eyes that reek of intelligence and subtle malice, with dropping lids and lips that seem to look as though he is in a permanent state of brooding. A look that morphs into a beautiful smile with straight rows of pearly white teeth. His canines are only marginally longer than the average human’s. His hair is short, well-combed, and blonde.

He has a straight nose that looks like it’s been broken exactly once and set back properly, but some damage can’t be reversed. He wears glasses for reading and dresses conservatively to the dismay of many who live and work around him.

The only thing that seems out of place is the earring that he wears, which is a subtle pink orb inlaid in black metal from the mage’s college so it will never be removed from his ear. The Whittaker family heirloom he calls it.

Personality: Surley is, for all intents and purposes, far too charming and charismatic for such a bigoted fool. He can charm the pants off just about anyone, and relishes that he is as charming as he is. Tier A liar, and a creative force that should have been spending his days penning novels instead of the rhetoric and propaganda he whips into existence on the daily. He tells the truth in a blunt sort of noncommittal way that makes people fall head over heels for him.

He loves to laugh, but his humor is proven to be drier than unbuttered toast. He finds the hard truth to be innately more hilarious than anything else, and will find others who can make him laugh immensely more enjoyable to be around.

He’s a visionary and has this way of speaking that captures attention and makes the heart soar. He’s a dangerous man to run for public offices, but thankfully, he has no interest in being in a position of legislative power. Gods help the poor fools who have to go up against him should that ever change.

History: Surley was born and raised in Estosa, where his father, Warren, was part of the military. His father was a full and honest to gods human and defended the city as necessary from any incoming threats, from the smallest invasion to botched assassination attempts. He was particularly good at catching and skinning kitsune when racial skirmishes would break out.

Surley’s mother, Samba, was a half-kitsune, half human woman who denounced her kitsune half the moment she fell begrudgingly in love with Warren. She was from a powerful warrior family from far beyond the Estosa walls, but she loved and seduced Warren while he was in the whore houses during a particularly rowdy celebration of victory.

Surley came along and the three of them lived in the innermost parts of the city, closer to the fortress. Samba loved to read and write, and she imbued her love into Surley, who had a charming way with words. Of course, she knew this was because her son was quarter-kitsune. Surley lacked the ability to change form, had no animalistic qualities, and could not do magic.

He, however, had been born with a starball, and Samba kept this hidden from Warren, who hated that kitsunes were moving into the neighborhood and were wild and uncontrollable, seducing the neighbors and having too many run ins with feral animals. He’d fought far too many.

Warren was a militant man, loved authority and order and tradition. He imbued that into Surley through diligent home-education and governing almost every aspect of Surley’s life right down to the people he was allowed to hang out with as a teenager.

Warren, however strict, was a loving father and only ever wanted his son to succeed in life, so when Surley showed interest in moving to Yfrelo to become an author, he footed the bill and praised his son for having an ultimate goal.

Surley moved to Yfrelo as soon as he was considered an adult. He lived in a little room attached to a paper mill and wrote stories about the world’s events. The longer he did so, the more he gained a following. It was a long battle, but soon, his readers would respond to his calls to action, sending in what they considered important to share with others.

Surley is incredibly bigoted. He will sing his praises to the mage’s college and the superiority of magic for the common man even though it also promotes racism and is solidly against inter-racial unions. His rhetoric is well known within Yfrelo, catering almost exclusively to those who do not take kindly to the competition’s papers and performances.

It’s almost scary how well he can communicate his thoughts and has on many occasions encouraged violence and actions that normally wouldn’t have been well received. The college, though not publicly endorsing Surely, is always willing to fill the man in on inner goings on that can skew the public into liking them more.
